Before and after the consultation

After the consultation: separate advice, decisions and tasks

Review the end of a legal consultation by checking what was explained, what you agreed and which person is responsible for each next step.

01

Read back your understanding

Before finishing, summarise what you think the adviser has explained. Ask them to correct anything you have misunderstood. A useful question is whether an option was recommended, merely discussed or ruled out pending more information. Those are different outcomes and should not collapse into one vague memory.

02

Check what the fee has covered

Ask whether the consultation ends the current engagement or whether work continues under agreed terms. Find out if a written summary, document review or follow-up question is included. Avoid assuming that having paid for a meeting means the office has accepted responsibility for all future steps.

03

Give each action an owner

If you are to find a document, record which document and how it should be sent. If the lawyer is to review something, ask when and how you will receive confirmation. Raise any time-sensitive issue directly. An unacknowledged email or a personal reminder does not establish that a lawyer is managing a deadline.

04

Return to a checked channel

Keep follow-up communication through the verified office contact. If payment or document-transfer instructions unexpectedly change, check them independently before acting. Keep your consultation notes somewhere private. This directory stores no agenda selections and cannot retrieve, interpret or manage advice you receive from a provider.
